Name Badges with Prentis – What Do They Mean?

The word prentis is old, but we have chosen to give it new life. It comes from the English phrase apprentice, meaning a trainee or someone in learning. In Faroese, the word had almost disappeared, but initially it meant “an inexperienced, young, or green person.”

The origin of the word goes back to the Latin apprehendere, meaning “to grasp,” “to take in,” or “to understand.” It fits perfectly with the idea of learning, growing, and developing in the workplace.

We like the thought of reusing a Faroese word instead of adopting an English title. Prentis is easy to pronounce, even for foreigners, and simple to spell. It’s a straightforward, familiar, and sustainable way to describe a new learning role.

With many people doing work experience at our hotel, both our team and our guests must remember that the Prentis badge means “be kind to me.” It’s a small reminder to show patience, support, and encouragement – through a smile, a word, or a helping hand.

Small actions can make a big difference – both for you and for me.

A special thank you to Beini w/Randi Kúrberg for her kind help and inspiration in developing the name badges
